Creating a Tribute: Tenth Anniversary of 9/11

George Washington, Greg Brady, and Abraham Lincoln Pay Tribute to America's Heroes

A few months ago, I posted this artwork I created in anticipation of the tenth anniversary of 9/11. The original post is here. Today being the actual anniversary, I thought I might post a few bits of artwork that went in to creating it.

Original sketch

This is the original sketch I made of my idea. As you can see, I sketch pretty loosely. I like to make up most of the details as I go, in the final drawing.

I follow that up buy searching out hundreds of images to use as references, to get the likenesses of the people correct, as well as for details of paramedic uniforms, the pre-9/11 New York City skyline, and things like that.

Then I create a file in Manga Studio, which is the software I use to do most of my drawing, that has all of my photo references in it on various layers, so I can look at them as I am drawing.

I draw all the different elements on separate layers. So, for instance, I would have Greg Brady on one layer, the New York Skyline on another, the Vinnie Barbarinos on another still... that way I can later move them around or resize them in Photoshop if I decide to make changes to it.

First version of drawing

This is the first version of the drawing. You can see that it had Presidents Obama and Bush in it as well as Lincoln, Washington, and Greg Brady. In fact, when I first had the idea for the drawing, it was only going to have Greg Brady and Barack Obama in it. But then I decided to add George Bush to it, so that the drawing could better represent the entire ten year period from September 11th 2001 to September 11th 2011. Also, I didn't want this drawing to appear partisan in any way, it's about bringing this country together, not taking it apart, so having a Republican and a Democrat on it seemed like a good idea. From there I decided to add Lincoln and Washington as well, as they are our two most iconic presidents, and having them there (along with Greg Brady) seemed to make this all about America, and not any one political party or ideology.

Ultimately, though, I felt it was too crowded up there with so many heads, and ended up going with just the trio of Washington, Brady, and Lincoln. Because I draw in layers, I didn't have to redraw anything, just click those two layers off.

Drawing with text

I had initially wanted to have some text in the drawing. I wasn't sure if people would understand what they were looking at without some explanation. I did leave some text on the T-Shirt version, but for my final artwork, I decided to let the images speak for themselves.


Final colored art

For the final colored version, I removed the text, then shifted the drawing up a little. this made more room on the bottom for the reflections in the water. When I'm drawing something I plan on coloring, I will often leave areas unfinished so I can finish them in color instead of in black and white, such as the details on the buildings, and the ripples on the water.

This is a true story, with all the dialogue 100% verbatim, from a convenience store I used to work graveyard shift at in Las Vegas about 10 years ago. I have a few more stories about this store that I will publish eventually. The place I'm working at now doesn't have a steady stream of insane customers, though, so I probably won't have any of these that are set in the present.

Freedom Force Stuff

I've recently dipped my toes back in to making skins for Freedom Force. The old message board most of the Freedom Force community used to frequent, Freedom Reborn, has been down for a long time. But there is a newer board called Trinity of Freedom where some people are posting now. I have a thread there with some pictures of the skins I made, if anyone is interested in checking them out.

I also found that my OLD webpage that was on Geocities has been archived here. It's out of date, but it's got pictures and descriptions of most of the skins I have made over the years. Eventually, I'm going to transfer all that info to this blog, or another site, but at least it's still around in some form for anyone who wants to see it.

Lincolnstein and Other Presidential Monsters

Just read this article at the Mego Museum about a new line of action figures that is coming out that combines the looks of classic Universal Monsters with United States presidents. People criticize Newt Gingrich for his multiple marriages and extra-marital affairs, but I really don't think they're being fair. It's not Newt's fault that he is so irresistible. I could probably put it up without mentioning him anywhere, but then no one would find it on there when they are searching for him, which is kind of the point.

Oh boy! Tonight's the night! If you're like me, your very excited about the idea of Donald Trump running for President. He hasn't officially announced he's running yet, but our wait is soon to over! Yes, tonight, on the season finale of "The Apprentice," The Donald has promised to announce when he will be making an announcement!

Some people like to make fun of The Donald's hair, and say the American people will never elect a man with hair like that to be President. But I say, that's ridiculous! There has never been a hairstyle quite as presidential. To prove it, I've added his hair to Presidents Lincoln, Obama, and Nixon. And they look awesome! If you thought these guys were great Presidents before, just look at them now!

Football humor. Not my usual thing, but I am a fan, and I am pretty frustrated with the lock-out, epsecially since it seems to motivated primarily by greed on the part of the owners. My Dad gave me the idea for this, and I drew it up in a couple of hours. I think it came out pretty good.

So I started this blog in 2009, posted stuff for about two months, and haven't posted anything since. I'm guessing that's about average for people who use blogspot though, am I right? Mess around with it for a little while, get bored after the novelty wears off, and move on.

Well, now I am back, at least until I get bored again in a few weeks. I've got some drawings and comics that I've made in the last year or so that I'll post hear for awhile. After I post all of those, well, I guess we'll find out as I go.

Heartwarming Christmas Memories

Ahh... Christmas... what heartwarming memories it brings.

My sister and I sitting on Santa's lap when I was 3 years old.

One of my favorite things to do when I was a boy was draw pictures of Santa Claus and Christmas. I would usually doodle these in school on the margins of my homework, or when I was supposed to be taking notes. I guess it was hard to concentrate on schoolwork while visions of sugar plums and what not danced through my head. I thought it would be nice to share some of my Christmas doodles with the rest of the world.

The first pic was drawn when I was 12 years old:

"Santa Kills." 1983

This picture is chock full of the elements children associate with Christmas. There's a decapitated head impaled on a knife, a skeleton Santa Claus, monster elves, guns, and more. And who can ever forgot that timeless Christmas carol: "I'm dreaming of a dead Christmas, where murder is commonplace. Santa will kill all the kiddies, in the whole human race." Brings a tear to my eye.

"Just What I Wanted." 1985

At the age of 14, I drew this picture of a young boy giving the gift of Santa's head with an axe embedded in it to an ascot wearing Ronald Reagan. Note the festive tree in the background, decorated with eyeballs, brains, chainsaws, and human fingers.

"Season's Greetings from Dark Santa." 1986

The traditional Christmas decapitated head makes another appearance in this drawing I made at the age of 14. Here, a musclebound "Dark Santa" spreads his own brand of Christmas cheer.

"You're Dust, Santa!" 1986

A youthful terrorist, armed with a handgun and grenade, prepares to murder Santa Claus, as Frosty the Snowman looks on in shock.

"Death of Santa." 1986

The young terrorist has successfully murdered Santa Claus, who lies in the snow with a knife sticking out of his jolly gut. An elf is in pursuit, while Frosty the Snowman looks on enraged.

"Christmas Dinner." 1987

A traditional Christmas dinner (Santa's brains roasted over an open fire) is prepared in this drawing I made at the age of 15.

"Zounds!" 1987

Santa Claus is depicted here with maggots emerging from his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.

"Merry Christmas from Santa, Rudolph, and Dracula!" 1998

As an adult, you might think this great holiday tradition would end, but I found that a boring work environment was just as conductive to doodling as a boring school day was, hence this piece drawn at the age of 26.

Santa Claus flashes a sweet Fonzie thumbs up as he gives the greatest gift of them all to a child on Christmas morning.

Who knows what wonderful, heartwarming Christmas doodles I may create in the future? Only time will tell. Merry Christmas, everyone!

I'm not saying 2009 was a BAD year for that stuff, I just don't think there was a lot of really good stuff worth celebrating.

Fonzie in Space

Here's a couple of songs I recorded earlier this year: Fonzie in Space and Space Rocker. They're really more like demos than finished products, but I thought it would be fun to release them anyway. Plus, I really dig that crazy cover I drew for it, with the Fonz riding his motorcycle on the moon.

Here is a god-awful Christmas song I recorded last year: Rudolph the Sexy Reindeer. The music samples an instrumental version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Arthur Lyman, plus some crappy loops and things I threw together on my computer. Top that off with some terrible lyrics, sung in a poorly imitated "Perverted Peter Lorre" voice, and you have the following song. I am deeply ashamed of this track, so naturally I thought it would be a good idea to post it online for the world to hear.

The Rock 'N' Roll Superman

Two of my favorite things in the world are comic books and rock and roll, so imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon this little gem from an old issue of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. Our story begins as Jimmy Olsen goes to visit his rock star cousin, Jerry, aka the one and only Rock'N R'Olsen. Gosh, I wonder what kind of shenanigans will ensue?

Jimmy wants to help. Bad idea. Jimmy Olsen's idea of helping usually involves drinking a potion and turning into a werewolf or a giant turtle monster.

Oh, the manager just happens to have a wig and a fake mustache laying around. That makes sense.

Yeah, Great Balls O' Fire! Wait a minute... he's Jerry Lee Lewis now? I'm confused.

Meanwhile, Superman is dancing with rich society women for "charity." Sounds suspiciously like super-prostitution to me. Suddenly, he starts to "rock-and-roll!" Great Balls O' Fire!

Apparently, Superman's idea of "rock-and-roll" dancing involves throwing women on the floor. Smooth. Oh and the blonde chick with the glasses now says, "Superman won't get my money,"... yep it's super-prostitution all right.

The next day, Superman is dancing at a private all-girls school for charity when... okay, hold on a second. Shouldn't Superman be out fighting crime or something? I mean, I guess if I had super powers I'd use them to pick up chicks, too, but come on, this is just silly! I mean, how much money can Superman make dancing, anyway?

Yeh! Jailhouse Rock!

Oh, I think you lost your dignity when you chose to be a super-prostitute, Supes, but that's just me...

Ah, and now we're introduced to the villain of the piece, "The Earl." "Pip pip, tallyho, and pardon me while I eat a wee bit of bangers 'n mash, guv'nor!" You can tell he's evil because he wears a monocle.

I think Superman wants the Earl to stuff his super-shorts with dollar bills.

Come on, Jimmy, I think we all know why your "hand is cramped."

Let's see... Superman starts dancing every time Jerry Olsen sings "rock-and-roll" music. Jerry Olsen, who looks exactly the same as Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen, except with a mustache. He's right, how could there possibly be a connection?

Then again, this is a world where no one can recognize Clark Kent as Superman because he wears a pair of glasses, so I guess we should give him a pass.

The next day, Superman doesn't have a rock-and-roll attack, and is finally able to stop the Earl. Since he now has full command of his powers, what does he use to stop them? Super-speed? Heat vision? Freeze breath? Nope. He throws rocks at them. Dude, I could have done that.

"Rock" and "roll" puns. Blimey.

Okay, so Jimmy's Superman signal watch was sending signals from the tape player to Superman's brain, which was forcing him to do the twist? It's scientific!

Wait, so Superman was going to earn a million dollars "dancing" for charity? Jimmy's going to have to step up his game if he's going to earn that kind of money. Maybe swap out the bowtie for a g-string... on second thought, keep the bowtie. Chicks dig a guy with a touch of class.

The Devilish Disguises of Jimmy Olsen

These are my first brand new Freedom Force skins in about a year. First up, I've got two versions of good old Beelzebub himself, a standard creepy looking devil, and a Jimmy Olsen in disguise variant. They are for Bobby69's male_cape_cowl_points69 mesh.

Next up, I've got a couple of Jimmy Olsens for Webrider's male_suit_bald mesh. There's Jovian Jimmy from the story "The Jimmy Olsen from Jupiter," and Jimmy in disguise as "Winky" McCoy from the story "The King of Crime."

I've got a few more Jimmy Olsens that I'm working on right now, so I should have some more skins out later this week.

Here's a picture of myself I drew yesterday, because I'm a narcisist, I guess. I wasn't really trying to make it look like Jesus, but it started turning out that way on it's own. I ended up turning my baggy t-shirt into a Jesus robe at that point. I was thinking of making it my "profile" pic on this blog, but I ended up just taking a quick photo instead. Picturing myself as Jesus in my profile might be a bit over the top.

Halloween Skins for Freedom Force

Here are a couple of my Freedom Force skins perfect for Halloween. It's Bela Lugosi as Dracula, and Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster. I've udpdated these skins since the last time I uploaded them. I increased the size from 256X256 to 512X512 for increased resolution. I've also added reflections to the Bela Lugosi skin so you can use it with the male_suit_effects mesh.

Freedom Force

Two of my favorite video games of all time are Freedom Force (2002), and it's sequel, Freedom Force Versus the Third Reich (2005). Both games were created by System Shock 2 developers Irrational Games. Irrational was later purchased by Take-Two Interactive, and went on to fame as the creators of Bioshock.

If you don't have Freedom Force or Freedom Force Versus the Third Reich yet, you should go out and buy copies right away! Seriously, you can download both titles from Steam for $7.49! I've seen physical copies of both titles on sale for less ten bucks. They're really good games, too, with a devoted fan following and lots of free community made mods, skins, and stuff you can play with after you finish the main campaigns. The gameplay itself is kind of hard to describe, it's sort of tactical, real-time strategy comic-book superhero action with RPG elements. The best part of the is you get to design your own superhero character, complete with all the powers, abillities, and weaknesses that superheroes have in the comics. You can use it to recreate your favorite characters or create all-new ones. Trust me, these games are fun, they're some of my all time favorites!

Freedom Force takes place in the comic book "Silver Age" of the 1960's and is heavily influenced by the comics of Jack Kirby. Freedom Force Versus the Third Reich sees our heroes travel back in time to the "Golden Age" of comic books to fight Nazis in World War Two. Both games do a really amazing job of capturing the look and feel of classic comic books.
