Final Episode of Shindig!

50 years ago today...
The final episode of ABC's music variety show "Shindig!" airs, before it is replaced on the schedule by "Batman."  During it's run the show featured acts like The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and The Who.

Dick and DeeDee - Lightning Strikes (A Tribute to Batman)

The final episode of Shindig! was used to promote upcoming shows on ABC, including this odd tribute to Batman.

The Knickerbockers - Lies

The Knickerbockers performed their Beatlesesque garage rock classic "Lies" on the final episode of Shindig!  This clip is not from Shindig!, but I'm including it anyway because I LOVE this song.

Batman Classic TV Egghead and The Penguin 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Figures Toy Company (2014)

Batman Classic TV Series Egghead and The Penguin (Figures Toy Company, 2014)
Egghead and the Penguin were part of the second series of Figures Toy Company's Batman Classic TV Series figures, released late in 2014.  They are 8 inch Mego style figures, which use original sculpted heads on stock bodies and custom cloth outfits.  Like most of the other figures I've bought in this line, the figures have "knock knees" and are don't hold a pose very well.  But aside from that, the figures are really good.  The costumes and the heads are great.  I especially like the sculpt and paint job on the Burgess Meredith figure.  The Vincent Price as Egghead sculpt is a little weaker, but still instantly recognizable.

Bat-Music #1 - Nelson Riddle & The Original TV Cast - Batman Exclusive Original Television Soundtrack Album

Welcome to the first edition of Bat-Music!  Every Monday for most of this year I'll be featuring an album or musical performance that ties in, officially or unofficially, with the 1966 Batman TV show.  This month I'm starting off with the official soundtrack to the show.  It features music written for the series by Neil Hefti, Nelson Riddle, and Billy May, all conducted by Nelson Riddle and his orchestra.  The album contains various musical cues from the show and is punctuated throughout with audio clips from the show voiced by Adam West, Burt Ward, Burgess Meredith, Frank Gorshin, and more.  It makes for fun listening if you are a fan of the series.

Paul Revere & The Raiders - Just Like Us

Released 50 years ago today...
Paul Revere & The Raiders - Just Like Us

"Just Like Us" is one of three long play albums Paul Revere & The Raiders released at the height of their popularity in 1966.  The album is a solid collection of garage covers highlighted by the tough sounding "Just Like Me" and the original composition "Steppin' Out"

The Beatles - Day Tripper and We Can Work it Out Music Videos

50 years ago today...
The Beatles music videos for "We Can Work it Out" and "Day Tripper" aired on the television show "Hullaballo."  The videos were filmed in November of 1965. The Beatles were no longer performing live at this point, and the videos were designed to allow them to continue to appear on television without having to make a personal appearance in the studio.  The videos were sent free of charge to television shows all over the globe.

The Beatles - We Can Work it Out

This is a fun video.  John keeps mugging for the camera, and you can tell Paul is trying to play it straight, but has to fight to keep from laughing every time he looks down at John.

Newly remastered versions of these and many more Beatles videos are available on the new music video edition of "Beatles 1."

The New Adventure People Kickstarter

Adventure People: Small in Size, Big on Adventure!
ZICA Toys just launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new line of 4" action figures, "Adventure People."  The Adventure People are modern style action figures, but using retro characters and branding from vintage toys.

The figures will have multiple points of articulation, various accessories, and swappable sets of hands and heads.  ZICA Toys worked with Boss Fight Studios to design these figures, so they use a similar type of body as Boss Fight's Vitruvian H.A.C.K.S. figures, and the Marauder Gun Runners Marauder Task Force figures.  So if you are a fan of those figures, you should definitely check these ones out, too, as they ought to fit in really nicely with those.

The initial assortment of figures will consist of 4 figures in 2 series.  The first series is "Captain Action" featuring the character who was originally launched by Ideal Toys as a 12" figure in 1966.  Joining Captain Action in this series is a new character in the Captain Action universe, "Captain Evil," who is an evil, blue-skinned clone of Captain Action, reminiscent of He-Man's blue-skinned duplicate Faker from the original Masters of the Universe toys.

Captain Action Series
The second series is "Comic Action Heroes."  This series features two characters who were vintage 8" Mego figures in the 1970s: Action Jackson and Jet Jungle.  Action Jackson was a military and adventure figure that was Mego's answer to G.I. Joe in 1971.  Jet Jungle was a South African Superhero that was sort of a cross between Tarzan, Superman, and Doc Savage, and was created as the spokesman for "Jungle Oats."  Mego released a Jet Jungle figure in South Africa in 1974.  Jet Jungle is one of the rarest of Mego figures, because he was only sold in South Africa.  In fact, there is only one known example of this figure in it's original box, and according to Wikipedia it was sold to a private collector "at the staggering price of $20,000."

Comic Action Heroes Series
The figures will be available individually, so if you're just a big Captain Action fan, but not in to Mego, for instance, you could just get the figures you want.  But if you do order the set of 4, each figure will come with a bonus electronic rifle accessory.

There will also be two variant versions of Captain Action in alternate color schemes that will be offered as stretch goals

In addition to it's use of vintage toy characters, this line is also resurrecting several toy brand trademarks from the past.  "Adventure People" was originally used by Fisher-Price for their line of 3 3/4" action figures in the 1970s and '80s.  "Comic Action Heroes" was originally used by Mego for their line of 4 inch superhero figures in the 1970s.  ZICA is also bringing back the name "Remco" as a division of ZICA Toys.  Remco was a toy company that operated from the 1950s through the 1990s, and produced numerous toys and action figures during that time.

So, if you are interested in these toys, why don't you head on over to their Kickstarter page and check them out for yourself:

ZICA has made some of my favorite toys in the past, including these fantastic 8" Buck Rogers figures...
...and these retro 3 3/4" Six Million Dollar Man figures!

Kenner Star Wars Action Figures - Collect All 21!

I had a nice collection of Kenner Star Wars figures, vehicles, and playsets when I was a kid, but I gave them all away when I was in Jr. High, and thought I had outgrown them.  But I always missed them as an adult, so a little over a year ago I started buying up the vintage figures all over again, a few figures at a time.  A couple of weeks ago, I finished my collection of the original 21 figures Kenner released under the "Star Wars" banner between 1977 and 1979, before moving on to "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980.

I had all of these figures when I was a kid except for Princess Leia and Death Squad Commander.  I never really wanted the Death Squad Commander when I was a kid, he just seemed like some generic background guy to me back then.  But I did want a Princess Leia, but nobody ever bought one for me for my birthday or Christmas, maybe thinking that I wouldn't want one because she was a girl.  I did end up getting a figure of Leia in her Empire Strikes Back Hoth outfit a few years later.  But the Leia with her white gown and buns in her hair has always been my favorite, so I'm really happy to have her in my collection now.

Now I have a decision to make:  what do I collect next?  Do I buy all of the 1977-79 playsets and vehicles?  Do I move straight on to the "Empire" action figures?  I definitely want to get the playsets and vehicles, but it might take me a long time to find affordable ones on my budget.  So I don't think I'll buy those right away, instead I'll just keep an eye out, and pick them up whenever I can find them for a good deal.

I think I might do some army building with the 1977-79 figures, and pick up some extra Jawas, Sand People, and Stormtroopers first.  After that I will probably move on to the Empire Strikes Back figures.
