Star Trek Mirror Universe Kirk and Spock 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Mego Corporation (2018)

Star Trek Mirror Universe Kirk and Spock 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Mego Corporation (2018)
After 35 years, Mego is back, and they are making new figures for one of their all-time classic figure lines: Star Trek!  This action figure two-pack is part of Wave 1 of the new Mego figures, and features the "Mirror Universe" version of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.

The window box

The figures come packed in a triangular window box with a diorama background of the transporter room of the ISS Enterprise (the Mirror Universe version of the USS Enterprise).  Both Kirk and Spock come equipped with a dagger, a phaser, and a communicator.

This is basically an updated version of the Mirror Universe Kirk and Spock figures released by Diamond Select and Emce Toys in 2012.  There are two main differences.  The new Mego figures have faces that are molded in flesh colored plastic, whereas the DST/Emce versions had their skin painted on their faces.  These newer versions look a little nicer as a result, and match up better with the other Star Trek figures from the 1970s and 2000s which also were molded in flesh colored plastic.  One slight downgrade however, is that Spock's beard is just painted on with the new version, but on the 2012 version it was actually sculpted.  I think the faces being molded the correct color is a nice enough upgrade that I prefer these new versions to the old ones.

Spock

These figures were released in September 2018 as part of Mego's exclusive distribution deal with Target stores.  They are available now in Target retail stores, and at Target.com.  Wave 1 also featured new Star Trek figures of Chekov and Sulu.  Wave 2 from October had Mr. Spock and The Gorn.  And Wave 3, which should be hitting stores right now, has another "Mirror Universe" two-pack with Sulu and Uhura, plus the Romulan Commander, and a new "Green Shirt" version of Captain Kirk.  So if you are a fan Star Trek Mego figures, this is a really great time, with rereleases of classic figures, as well as all new figures.

Samantha from "Bewitched" and The Wicked Witch from "The Wizard of Oz" 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Mego Corporation (2018)

Samantha from "Bewitched" and The Wicked Witch from "The Wizard of Oz" - Mego Corporation (2018)
This October, two Mego witches can be found haunting the aisles of local Target stores.  One is The Wicked Witch of the West, which is a recreation of the figure Mego first produced in 1975.  It's part of a "Wizard of Oz" 2 pack that also comes with Dorothy.  The other witch is Samantha from the classic 1960s TV show "Bewitched."

Samantha
The two figures share the same witch hat, but are otherwise unique.  Samantha comes with a cartoon cat that Bewitched fans will recognize from the animated opening credits of the TV show.  The Wicked Witch comes with her broom.

Wizard of Oz 2-Pack
I'm not really that big of a Bewitched or Wizard of Oz fan.  I mean, I liked them both when I was a kid, but not enough to want to collect merchandise from the properties as an adult.  That being said, I am a fan of Mego Monsters, especially around Halloween, so I couldn't resist adding two new witches to my collection.

Frankenstein 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

Frankenstein 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)
After 35 years, the all-new line of Mego action figures continue to roll out at Target!  Earlier this month I reviewed Mego's new "Bela Lugosi as Dracula" figure from Wave 1 of the new Mego figures.  Today, I'm reviewing "Frankenstein" from Wave 2.

To start off with, this is not a licensed "Universal Monsters" Frankenstein, but it's supposed to be a "generic" public-domain type Frankenstein, which is totally cool, as far as I am concerned.  Mego did the same thing in the 1970s with their "Mad Monsters" series of figures, and I love those.  But... yeah this totally IS the Universal Monsters Frankenstein, just without the neck-bolts.  I'm actually kind of surprised that Mego's lawyers approved this (if they did), and I really hope they don't get sued by Universal Studios.  Also, the sculpt, paint job, and costuming on the Wave 1 Dracula figure was phenomenal.  The Wave 2 Frankenstein however, is not of the same level of quality.  I still think it's a good figure, but it's not really the highlight of Wave 2 the same way Dracula was for Wave 1.

The face sculpt is actually the same sculpt that was used on the officially licensed Universal Monsters Retro Cloth Figure Frankenstein that Diamond Select and Emce Toys released in 2010.  That's not really a surprise.  Paul "Dr. Mego" Clarke of Emce Toys is also one of the people behind the relaunch of Mego, along with Marty Abrams, and they have been repurposing a lot of the Emce sculpts for this new line of Mego figures.  The only difference in the sculpt is that the neck-bolts have been removed.  But it has the same facial features, the same scars, the same flat head -- it is clearly still the Universal Monsters Frankenstein.  The other difference is the coloring.  The Emce Toys version was painted a grayish-green, where this one is molded in almost lime-green plastic. The original grayish-green actually did a better job of showing off the facial features.  The facial features on this figure, with it's lighter green color, look softer and less defined, but I think that's all down to the color, not the actual sculpt.

There are a few other features missing form this newer figure.  The 2010 version had black painted fingernails, and metal hinges on his wrists, while this one's hands and wrists are just solid lime green.  Also, the 2010 version had a pair of awesome platform boots that really helped to nail that classic Frankenstein look.  The new figure just has some standard issue Mego boots.  These omissions may have been to make it visually distinct from the official Universal Monsters version, or maybe they were just cost-cutting measures.

Another strange thing is that the package features a black and white drawing of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein.  The neck-bolts have been erased from the drawing, but it is still clearly, unmistakably Boris Karloff in his Universal Monsters makeup as Frankenstein.  Again, I don't know why Mego would do that, because it seems like they are asking to be sued, by either Universal Studios or the Karloff estate.  For the record, I don't want them to be sued, I love the new Mego Corporation, I'm just worried for them on this score.  The back of the package features a "generic" painting of Frankenstein, with bolts in his forehead instead of his neck, I'm not sure why they didn't just use that art for the front.

Summing it up, my thoughts on this figure are that if you already own the 2010 DST/Emce Frankenstein, you probably don't need to buy this one.  It's really just a downgraded version of that same figure.  That is unless you're like me and are nuts for Frankenstein, in which case you will buy practically any Frankie figure.  And honestly, this is a good figure on it's own merits, and especially for the low price of $12.99.  If you don't already own the 2010 version, there is no reason why you should hesitate to pick this up if these type of figures are your bag.  Good luck finding one, though.  This figure is probably the hardest one to find from the Wave 2 Megos.  It sold out on the Target website right away, and it took me nearly a month of constantly checking my local Target stores before I finally found one, AND it was the last one in the store, AND the card was damaged.  You can find them on eBay, for 3 to 4 times as much money as what it sells for in the stores.  But I wasn't willing to pay that.

Next up for Mego monster fans is Wave 3 of the figures, which have not OFFICIALLY been released yet, but are still popping up in the stores.  Target is really bad on that front, these toys start to trickle out weeks before their street date, and then other times don't go up on the shelves until weeks after.  Pretty much all you can do is buy what you can from Target.com, and then constantly check back in the stores to see if the ones that weren't available online have been stocked yet.  Wave 3 features "The Screaming Werewolf" from the movie "Face of the Screaming Werewolf" which was a particularly bad movie, being made by editing together two unrelated Mexican monster movies, dubbing them in English, and combining them with some newly shot footage of American actors.  The film was a mess, but it did feature horror icon Lon Chaney, Jr as the werewolf.  I'll be looking for that one in my frequent trips to Target in the coming months or weeks.

Bela Lugosi as Dracula 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

Bela Lugosi as Dracula 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

In 2018, new action figures from Mego hit the store shelves for the first time in 35 years!  Mego was the king of action figures in the 1970s, but they didn't make the adjustment to the rapidly changing toy market in the '80s, and went out of business in 1983.  But now Mego president Marty Abrams has brought his company back, with an exclusive deal with Target stores, and new waves of figures are on sale now.  The second wave of figures is hitting Target stores and their website as I write this.  The first wave of figures featured characters from Star Trek, DC Comics, and various other characters from TV, movies, and music.  The best of that bunch, in my opinion, was this one: Bela Lugosi as Dracula.

"The light!"
This is not the Universal Monsters Dracula, rather, this is a figure licensed from the Bela Lugosi estate, and features a great likeness of the actor.  There have been many figures of Dracula made over the years, but hardly any of them have had the rights to Bela Lugosi's likeness.  As a result, we've gotten a lot of "generic" Draculas, that look like the character more or less, but lack the distinct facial features that make Lugosi's Dracula so special.  I'm a big Bela Lugosi fan, and I'm really excited to finally have a figure that actually looks like him.  Mego have really hit it out of the park with this one, too.  The facial sculpt is superb, the paint job is great, the costume is really, really nice.  This figure is just a much higher quality than what I would normally expect in an 8 inch retro figure.

Bela Lugosi
It's not totally perfect though.  One issue that a lot of the Bela Lugosi figures have is mismatched arms or hands.  When you buy the figure in the package, his hands and arms are covered by his cape.  But when folks have been bringing them home and opening them up, some people have found two right hands, or two left hands, or sometimes even two of the same arm, so that the elbow will bend in the wrong direction.  I read about this online at the Mego Museum, and when I opened my figure up, sure enough, I had this problem, too.  My figure has two left hands.  Weirdly enough, it doesn't bother me, though.  It almost makes him seem more of an unnatural or supernatural being, like two left hands is part of his vampire curse.

Two Left Hands!
Wave 2 of the new Mego figures are hitting the stores now, and there is a new Frankenstein figure in that wave, hopefully I will be picking that up soon, and when I do I'll try show it off this month for the Countdown to Halloween.  In the past, I've tried to post every day for the Countdown, but that's not happening this month, I just don't have as much spare time to blog as I used to.  But I've got a total of 8 Halloween TV show reviews that are already written and uploaded to the blog, which are scheduled to go online about every 4 days or so.  And in between, I'll be snapping photos of some of my monster action figures, and posting reviews of them as I go along.  So hopefully I'll have something new every couple of days.  And in the meantime please click on the link to the Countdown to Halloween and check out all of the other blogs that are participating this year!

Legendary Marvel Super-Heroes "Captain America" 8 Inch Retro Action Figure Set - Diamond Select/Emce Toys (2015)

Diamond Select Marvel Retro Captain America Figure Set
Diamond Select's Marvel Retro Captain America Figure Set is part of a series of figures they have been releasing that come with a reproduction of a vintage Marvel Mego figure, along with a variety of customizing parts to go along with it.  The Captain America set comes with a reproduction of Mego's Captain America figure from the 1970s and it's display box,  along with costume parts you can add to the figure to make a Steve Rogers "secret identity" figure, or a Captain America in a more modern costume (sort of like what Mego would have made if it was still around producing these figures today).  It also comes with a booklet detailing the history of Captain America, Mego's original Cap action figures, a look at some custom Cap figures, and some behind the scenes stuff about the making of this new set.

American Trio
These sets are usually pretty expensive, the manufacturer's suggested retail is $80.  This unfortunately is a condition of the licensing agreement that Diamond select has with Marvel.  They are required to price this as a high-end collectable rather than as an action figure.  But if you shop around a bit, you can usually find them cheaper.  Amazon for instance, usually has them for about 25 bucks off the suggested price.  I picked this up on sale for $38 last October.  Anytime you see them for a price like that, I suggest you pick them up, because they are fun toys.

The Mego reproduction figure retains all of the goofiness and costume inaccuracies of the original figure from the 1970s.
Rather than swap parts back and forth for the three different costumes, I picked up a couple of extra "Type S" bodies from 8 Inch Super Store.  I used the body that came with the set on the Steve Rogers figure, a regular Type S body on the vintage style Captain America, and a Type S with "upgrade kit" limbs on the modern style Captain.  The upgrade kit limbs have a more defined, muscular look to them. Most of those details get lost under the costume, except for the broader shoulders, which are noticeable and make a big difference.  Also the upgrade kit legs are slightly longer, so your hero ends up slightly taller and more heroic looking.

The modern styled figure features a comics accurate costume and more detailed sculpt.

Batman Classic TV Egghead and The Penguin 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Figures Toy Company (2014)

Batman Classic TV Series Egghead and The Penguin (Figures Toy Company, 2014)
Egghead and the Penguin were part of the second series of Figures Toy Company's Batman Classic TV Series figures, released late in 2014.  They are 8 inch Mego style figures, which use original sculpted heads on stock bodies and custom cloth outfits.  Like most of the other figures I've bought in this line, the figures have "knock knees" and are don't hold a pose very well.  But aside from that, the figures are really good.  The costumes and the heads are great.  I especially like the sculpt and paint job on the Burgess Meredith figure.  The Vincent Price as Egghead sculpt is a little weaker, but still instantly recognizable.

Universal Monsters "Frankenstein" 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Diamond Select/Emce Toys (2010)

Universal Monsters Retro Cloth Figure Frankenstein (2010, Diamond Select and Emce Toys)
Frankenstein was part of the first series of Diamond Select and Emce Toys Retro Cloth Universal Monsters figures, along with The Wolf Man, released in 2010.  I bought this figure in a lot of loose action figures on Ebay, and it was missing it's original jacket, shirt, and one of it's boots.  So the shirt and jacket you see in the photos are actually replacements from CTVT, so bear that in mind when viewing the photos.  The original had a more muted green jacket that had buttons and fit The Monster better.  It also had two awesome rubber platform boots that really completed his look.  Mine has one awesome rubber boot, and one not-so-awesome boot that I made out of black electrical tape.  Smooth.  I've included a photo of the figure in it's proper outfit to the left.

Still, even with his missing and replaced costume bits, I still think this is a great figure.  I mean, he has a fantastic face sculpt with lots of fine details, pretty much the opposite of the cartoony Remco Frankenstein figure I featured yesterday.  He also has great hands, and they did a really clever thing were they incorporated the hinge on the articulated wrist of the action figure into the sculpt.  And even though I only have one of his boots, that one boot is a perfect boot.  They probably could have gotten away with some generic Mego boots and no one would have complained... but given him these extra thick platform boots, just like the ones Karloff wore in the movies, really takes this figure to another level.

Frankenface
At some point I'm going to have to seek out some complete versions of this figure and The Wolf Man, with all of their proper costume pieces, but for now I'm just glad to have any version of them in my collection, because my "Mad Monster" collection would feel really incomplete without them.  I have one more figure left to feature from this line this month, and that will be up in a couple of days (heck, there's only a couple of days left until Halloween... this month is going by fast!)  Tomorrow I'll be back with yet another version of Frankenstein's Monster: Herman Munster by Classic TV Toys!

Universal Monsters Metaluna Mutant 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Diamond Select/Emce Toys (2013)

The Metaluna Mutant came out along with the Phantom of the Opera as the fourth and final wave of Universal Monsters Retro Cloth Figures by Diamond Select and Emce Toys.  This Universal Monster appeared in the 1955 Universal Pictures Sci-Fi film "This Island Earth."

Click here to read my 2012 review of This Island Earth:
http://misfitdaydream.blogspot.com/2012/11/this-island-earth-1955.html

The Metaluna Mutant

One of the interesting aspects of this monster in the movie was that it was hard to tell where it's clothes ended and it's skin began.  It kind of looked like it was wearing trousers with veins on them.  So a Mego style cloth outfit works really well for it.  This figure has a really nice costume, as well as uniquely sculpted hands, feet, and head.  It's pretty darn cool looking.

There is one big flaw, though.  It's shoulder pads are sculpted out of hard plastic, and it severely limits the movement of it's shoulders.  It basically has it's arms stuck pointing straight down it's sides.  So bending the elbows and rotating the wrists are the only arm articulation, which is very limiting when posing the figure.  If you want to turn lemons in to lemonade, you can say that it's perpetually awkward arms give it an unnatural "alien" quality. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Big Bulging Exposed Brain

It's easy to look past the flaws when it has such a weird, cool design, though.  I'm just a sucker for any monster with big bulging exposed brains.  It's got that "Mars Attacks" factor to it.
