Alice from "The Brady Bunch" 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

Alice from "The Brady Bunch" 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

Alice from "The Brady Bunch" was released by Mego as part of their first wave of new action figures in September 2018.  It's currently available on Target.com and in many Target retail locations. Target's assortment of Mego figures varies quite a bit from store to store, but Alice doesn't seem to be selling out and still looks to be pretty widely available.  I guess there isn't a big demand for Brady Bunch action figures in 2018.  Yeah, it's a goofy show, but I watched so many episodes of it when I was a kid that I think it might be imprinted on my DNA.  So even if no one else wants Alice, I do, gosh darn it.

"If you think we're alive, you ought to speak."
So this figure, like all of the Mego figures, is more of a doll than an action figure, by modern standards.  But by the standards of the 1970s, when Mego was king, this was what action figures were all about.  Back in the day, "action figures" were created as a way for toy companies to replicate the success of the girls' Barbie dolls with boys.  It began with G.I. Joe, which was basically a Ken doll in military drag, and continued with other cloth outfit figures like The Six Million Dollar Man, Big Jim, and Pulsar: The Ultimate Man of Adventure!  But topping them all in the 1970s was Mego!  Mego made figures from Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and more.  Smaller plastic figures, like Kenner's Star Wars figures, eventually came to dominate this category in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but if you were a boy in the early to mid '70s, Mego was where it was at.

Mego's Alice figure comes with an action-packed "SLICE OF CAKE" accessory!
Alice here has 14 points of articulation, and her legs and arms are held in place by elastic bands, just like the original figures from the 1970s.  Yeah, those elastic bands aren't as nice as modern day action figures ball joints, and as a result, even with 14 points of articulation, the figure doesn't really have as good of a range of movement as a modern figures... but it does have 40 years of kid-tested playability behind it, so there's that.  Yeah, that's the ticket!  Personally, I love these things, because I played with figures like this when I was a little kid, like 3-5 years old, and I still have vivid memories of my Mego Spider-Man and Batman figures, so any time I pick one of these up, it puts a smile on my face.  Would modern day kids like these things?  Who knows.  Maybe.  I mean they aren't that different from modern toy lines like Monster High or DC Super Hero Girls, right?  And of course Barbie is still going strong.  But those are all girls toys... would boys be into these?  Well probably not Alice, but, like, Dracula or something?  I'm guessing probably not, but who knows.  I suppose these are really aimed at grown folks like me who had the original Megos as a kid, anyway.

So yeah, um, here's some pictures of Alice... inspired by "Alice in Wonderland" and the Jefferson Airplane song "White Rabbit," because those also have someone named "Alice," even though it's a completely different Alice!  Or is she?  Seriously, did you ever notice that Alice from "Alice in Wonderland" and Alice from "The Brady Bunch" wear almost identical blue dresses with white aprons?  Seriously, maybe they are the same person!  Like, Alice from Wonderland grew up and became the maid to the Bradys!  Stranger things have happened.

She did not get hold of anything, but she heard a little shriek and a fall, and a crash of broken glass, from which she concluded that it was just possible it had fallen into a cucumber-frame, or something of the sort."

Star Trek Mirror Universe Kirk and Spock 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Mego Corporation (2018)

Star Trek Mirror Universe Kirk and Spock 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Mego Corporation (2018)
After 35 years, Mego is back, and they are making new figures for one of their all-time classic figure lines: Star Trek!  This action figure two-pack is part of Wave 1 of the new Mego figures, and features the "Mirror Universe" version of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.

The window box

The figures come packed in a triangular window box with a diorama background of the transporter room of the ISS Enterprise (the Mirror Universe version of the USS Enterprise).  Both Kirk and Spock come equipped with a dagger, a phaser, and a communicator.

This is basically an updated version of the Mirror Universe Kirk and Spock figures released by Diamond Select and Emce Toys in 2012.  There are two main differences.  The new Mego figures have faces that are molded in flesh colored plastic, whereas the DST/Emce versions had their skin painted on their faces.  These newer versions look a little nicer as a result, and match up better with the other Star Trek figures from the 1970s and 2000s which also were molded in flesh colored plastic.  One slight downgrade however, is that Spock's beard is just painted on with the new version, but on the 2012 version it was actually sculpted.  I think the faces being molded the correct color is a nice enough upgrade that I prefer these new versions to the old ones.

Spock

These figures were released in September 2018 as part of Mego's exclusive distribution deal with Target stores.  They are available now in Target retail stores, and at Target.com.  Wave 1 also featured new Star Trek figures of Chekov and Sulu.  Wave 2 from October had Mr. Spock and The Gorn.  And Wave 3, which should be hitting stores right now, has another "Mirror Universe" two-pack with Sulu and Uhura, plus the Romulan Commander, and a new "Green Shirt" version of Captain Kirk.  So if you are a fan Star Trek Mego figures, this is a really great time, with rereleases of classic figures, as well as all new figures.

Samantha from "Bewitched" and The Wicked Witch from "The Wizard of Oz" 8 Inch Retro Action Figures - Mego Corporation (2018)

Samantha from "Bewitched" and The Wicked Witch from "The Wizard of Oz" - Mego Corporation (2018)
This October, two Mego witches can be found haunting the aisles of local Target stores.  One is The Wicked Witch of the West, which is a recreation of the figure Mego first produced in 1975.  It's part of a "Wizard of Oz" 2 pack that also comes with Dorothy.  The other witch is Samantha from the classic 1960s TV show "Bewitched."

Samantha
The two figures share the same witch hat, but are otherwise unique.  Samantha comes with a cartoon cat that Bewitched fans will recognize from the animated opening credits of the TV show.  The Wicked Witch comes with her broom.

Wizard of Oz 2-Pack
I'm not really that big of a Bewitched or Wizard of Oz fan.  I mean, I liked them both when I was a kid, but not enough to want to collect merchandise from the properties as an adult.  That being said, I am a fan of Mego Monsters, especially around Halloween, so I couldn't resist adding two new witches to my collection.

Frankenstein 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

Frankenstein 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)
After 35 years, the all-new line of Mego action figures continue to roll out at Target!  Earlier this month I reviewed Mego's new "Bela Lugosi as Dracula" figure from Wave 1 of the new Mego figures.  Today, I'm reviewing "Frankenstein" from Wave 2.

To start off with, this is not a licensed "Universal Monsters" Frankenstein, but it's supposed to be a "generic" public-domain type Frankenstein, which is totally cool, as far as I am concerned.  Mego did the same thing in the 1970s with their "Mad Monsters" series of figures, and I love those.  But... yeah this totally IS the Universal Monsters Frankenstein, just without the neck-bolts.  I'm actually kind of surprised that Mego's lawyers approved this (if they did), and I really hope they don't get sued by Universal Studios.  Also, the sculpt, paint job, and costuming on the Wave 1 Dracula figure was phenomenal.  The Wave 2 Frankenstein however, is not of the same level of quality.  I still think it's a good figure, but it's not really the highlight of Wave 2 the same way Dracula was for Wave 1.

The face sculpt is actually the same sculpt that was used on the officially licensed Universal Monsters Retro Cloth Figure Frankenstein that Diamond Select and Emce Toys released in 2010.  That's not really a surprise.  Paul "Dr. Mego" Clarke of Emce Toys is also one of the people behind the relaunch of Mego, along with Marty Abrams, and they have been repurposing a lot of the Emce sculpts for this new line of Mego figures.  The only difference in the sculpt is that the neck-bolts have been removed.  But it has the same facial features, the same scars, the same flat head -- it is clearly still the Universal Monsters Frankenstein.  The other difference is the coloring.  The Emce Toys version was painted a grayish-green, where this one is molded in almost lime-green plastic. The original grayish-green actually did a better job of showing off the facial features.  The facial features on this figure, with it's lighter green color, look softer and less defined, but I think that's all down to the color, not the actual sculpt.

There are a few other features missing form this newer figure.  The 2010 version had black painted fingernails, and metal hinges on his wrists, while this one's hands and wrists are just solid lime green.  Also, the 2010 version had a pair of awesome platform boots that really helped to nail that classic Frankenstein look.  The new figure just has some standard issue Mego boots.  These omissions may have been to make it visually distinct from the official Universal Monsters version, or maybe they were just cost-cutting measures.

Another strange thing is that the package features a black and white drawing of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein.  The neck-bolts have been erased from the drawing, but it is still clearly, unmistakably Boris Karloff in his Universal Monsters makeup as Frankenstein.  Again, I don't know why Mego would do that, because it seems like they are asking to be sued, by either Universal Studios or the Karloff estate.  For the record, I don't want them to be sued, I love the new Mego Corporation, I'm just worried for them on this score.  The back of the package features a "generic" painting of Frankenstein, with bolts in his forehead instead of his neck, I'm not sure why they didn't just use that art for the front.

Summing it up, my thoughts on this figure are that if you already own the 2010 DST/Emce Frankenstein, you probably don't need to buy this one.  It's really just a downgraded version of that same figure.  That is unless you're like me and are nuts for Frankenstein, in which case you will buy practically any Frankie figure.  And honestly, this is a good figure on it's own merits, and especially for the low price of $12.99.  If you don't already own the 2010 version, there is no reason why you should hesitate to pick this up if these type of figures are your bag.  Good luck finding one, though.  This figure is probably the hardest one to find from the Wave 2 Megos.  It sold out on the Target website right away, and it took me nearly a month of constantly checking my local Target stores before I finally found one, AND it was the last one in the store, AND the card was damaged.  You can find them on eBay, for 3 to 4 times as much money as what it sells for in the stores.  But I wasn't willing to pay that.

Next up for Mego monster fans is Wave 3 of the figures, which have not OFFICIALLY been released yet, but are still popping up in the stores.  Target is really bad on that front, these toys start to trickle out weeks before their street date, and then other times don't go up on the shelves until weeks after.  Pretty much all you can do is buy what you can from Target.com, and then constantly check back in the stores to see if the ones that weren't available online have been stocked yet.  Wave 3 features "The Screaming Werewolf" from the movie "Face of the Screaming Werewolf" which was a particularly bad movie, being made by editing together two unrelated Mexican monster movies, dubbing them in English, and combining them with some newly shot footage of American actors.  The film was a mess, but it did feature horror icon Lon Chaney, Jr as the werewolf.  I'll be looking for that one in my frequent trips to Target in the coming months or weeks.

Bela Lugosi as Dracula 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

Bela Lugosi as Dracula 8 Inch Retro Action Figure - Mego Corporation (2018)

In 2018, new action figures from Mego hit the store shelves for the first time in 35 years!  Mego was the king of action figures in the 1970s, but they didn't make the adjustment to the rapidly changing toy market in the '80s, and went out of business in 1983.  But now Mego president Marty Abrams has brought his company back, with an exclusive deal with Target stores, and new waves of figures are on sale now.  The second wave of figures is hitting Target stores and their website as I write this.  The first wave of figures featured characters from Star Trek, DC Comics, and various other characters from TV, movies, and music.  The best of that bunch, in my opinion, was this one: Bela Lugosi as Dracula.

"The light!"
This is not the Universal Monsters Dracula, rather, this is a figure licensed from the Bela Lugosi estate, and features a great likeness of the actor.  There have been many figures of Dracula made over the years, but hardly any of them have had the rights to Bela Lugosi's likeness.  As a result, we've gotten a lot of "generic" Draculas, that look like the character more or less, but lack the distinct facial features that make Lugosi's Dracula so special.  I'm a big Bela Lugosi fan, and I'm really excited to finally have a figure that actually looks like him.  Mego have really hit it out of the park with this one, too.  The facial sculpt is superb, the paint job is great, the costume is really, really nice.  This figure is just a much higher quality than what I would normally expect in an 8 inch retro figure.

Bela Lugosi
It's not totally perfect though.  One issue that a lot of the Bela Lugosi figures have is mismatched arms or hands.  When you buy the figure in the package, his hands and arms are covered by his cape.  But when folks have been bringing them home and opening them up, some people have found two right hands, or two left hands, or sometimes even two of the same arm, so that the elbow will bend in the wrong direction.  I read about this online at the Mego Museum, and when I opened my figure up, sure enough, I had this problem, too.  My figure has two left hands.  Weirdly enough, it doesn't bother me, though.  It almost makes him seem more of an unnatural or supernatural being, like two left hands is part of his vampire curse.

Two Left Hands!
Wave 2 of the new Mego figures are hitting the stores now, and there is a new Frankenstein figure in that wave, hopefully I will be picking that up soon, and when I do I'll try show it off this month for the Countdown to Halloween.  In the past, I've tried to post every day for the Countdown, but that's not happening this month, I just don't have as much spare time to blog as I used to.  But I've got a total of 8 Halloween TV show reviews that are already written and uploaded to the blog, which are scheduled to go online about every 4 days or so.  And in between, I'll be snapping photos of some of my monster action figures, and posting reviews of them as I go along.  So hopefully I'll have something new every couple of days.  And in the meantime please click on the link to the Countdown to Halloween and check out all of the other blogs that are participating this year!

My "Mad Monster" Collection

Happy Halloween, everybody.  For my final post for this year's Countdown to Halloween, I thought I'd take a group photograph all of the Mego style 8 inch cloth outfit monster figures I've been featuring this month.  Hopefully my collection will be even bigger next year!

I hope everyone has enjoyed all the monster toys and movies I've reviewed this month.  Coming up in November, I've got a handful of horror movie reviews that I didn't have time to finish this month.  I pretty much blew my wad on monster toys, though, but I've got other fun action figures on tap like Flash Gordon, Batman, Garbage Pail Kids, The Venture Bros., and who knows what else, so there is some fun stuff to look forward to.

Then in December, I'm going to be posting a lot of creepy and weird Christmas stuff for this year's Creepmas.

But my really big plans are for 2016!  2016 is the 50th anniversary of 1966, which is my favorite year in pop culture.  1966 saw the premieres of some of my all-time favorite TV shows like Batman, Star Trek, and The Monkees, and there were all kinds of amazing books, movies, music, comics, and art that year.  So I'm going to be celebrating that in a BIG way.  I've got all kinds of features, big and small planned, and I'm going to be reviewing a ton of Star Trek and Batman '66 toys.  I've actually been working on this all year in 2015, I've already got a bunch of stuff written, so I know it's going to be awesome.    So stick around, Bat-Fans, the best is yet to come!
